A small little unassuming word,
but which brims with defiance.
A piece of sunshine that I clasp in my hand,
It is encased in a locket
that glows warm at my throat.
My little raft keeping me afloat,
it trembles and sways when it senses a tempest at sea.
Turbulent winds circle us threateningly
Thunder reverberates through the air
and echoes back a thousand times louder,
as though scoffing at my tiny haven.
I quiver and clutch the soaked logs
my little raft neither sinks nor crumbles.
It is determined to see the rainbow through the rain
and so I drift into restless sleep,
headlong into dreams
of battles with
and looming shadows
Where each time i crawl away, bruised, but somehow
Even as shadows stealthily climb my back,
finding handholds and footholds
in my fears and dreams,
I close my eyes
and my Patronus shines bright.
My shadows slither back into their dark corners,
they know not what this blinding brilliance is,
but they sense its radiating power.
For all their might, shadows have their own fears
and so they sink into the ground,
and bide their time.
It is as stormy as
waves crashing against rocks at sea
or as peaceful
as gazing dreamily at clouds in a clear blue sky,
lying in a field of dandelions
with flowers in my hair.
It twinkles in every star in indigo skies
in every colour of twilight
It wafts up as the petrichor of first rains
and disguises as warm tea.
I find it tucked away in the margins of books
and in soulful melodies,
in the laughter of friends
and the lingering softness of a kiss.
Each time my thoughts haunt me,
hope is the blanket that covers my body.
It surges in every breath,
and wipes every tear.
It helps me smile,
it keeps me alive.
I stand in dusk’s soft embrace
and look down at the thin scars
serpentining across my body
I quell the sting I feel
for I sense hope standing beside me.
I think of tomorrow
where once again we will rise
and face the world with swords drawn.
I breathe in
We smile at each other
For hope has lent me its wings
and we know
that one day,
we will fly towards the beckoning horizons,
and be free.
